Wrangaton — Devon, England

Wrangaton is a hamlet located in Devon at the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park with magnificent views of the South Hams countryside at its threshold.

WrangatonThis is the perfect place to stop when seeking a countryside location, its convenience and proximity to Dartmoor National Park and the South Hams countryside offers a double treat to the aesthetic eye. Wrangaton is a peaceful, tranquil place to stay, with many bed and breakfasts available, as well as accommodations at some of the local working farms. And for the golf minded, there is an added dimension to this hamlet; as for visitors of Dartmoor, and tourists in general, there is the Wrangaton Golf Club, which originated in 1895 and is built on the slopes of Dartmoor. The Wrangaton Golf Club is an attraction in itself, as its unique configuration of 9 moorland holes and 9 holes in parkland offers the golfer a varied and challenging course which is said to be unmatched in Devon. This parkland course is situated on more than 50 acres of land and offers a panoramic view of the South Hams countryside on to the sea from its conservatory restaurant.

Wrangaton is a wonderful place to take a stroll through the lovely countryside on a public trail. Perhaps you might come across signs of the old South Devon Railway which is no longer in operation. The rail line once ran between Exeter and Plymouth, serving for a short while as the railhead for Kingsbridge during the late 1800's. After a century of use the passengers using the line diminished and eventually the Wrangaton Station had to be closed during the 1960's. Although at track level little will be found, it is believed that a remnant of the station still exists; having housed a landscaping business a few years after the station was closed.

If you come across the station, view the surroundings carefully with an eye towards Victorian detail; and visualize "Hound of the Baskervilles", as it is believed that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used Wrangaton Station as the inspiration for the wayside station that Dr. Watson, Sir Henry Baskerville and Dr. Mortimor arrived at, after Sherlock Holmes sent the three men ahead to Sir Henry's estate on the Moor. If you continue to walk on, a little way to the south of Wrangaton you will come to the ruins of Fowlscombe Manor, which is believed to be a likely candidate for 'Baskerville Hall'.
